Hi - I maybe looking to view a boat located in France so my question is - do I have to pay for registration annually ?
according to the broker this is 780 euros per year
is there a way round paying this i.e keeping the boat in France but registering her in the u.k
( please bear with me as this would be my first boat and I am trying to get to know the ins and outs of this madcap world)

all opinions welcomed
Jon

No problem - you are English
Register the boat in UK with a new SSR Registration.
Fly UK Ensign.
Just been done by a friend of mine
Wino

thank you Wino
So is it easy to get on the ssr registration even though the boat is in France - and how much does this roughly cost and is this a yearly payment ?

Where in France -inland or sea ?
The French reg for coast /sea is for French citizens they pay a wealth tax annually -hence the Reg no .
If you are a Uk citizen -then as above SSR Sumit like £30 ( guess ) can be done online.
When Duoanes ( french customs )" do you" -you flash the SSR cert and they go away .

Inland not sure -might need some sort annual cert -? Maybe that's what broker means??

I'm guessing that you don't personally (not the boat) intend to be in France more than 186 days a year. I know with Spain that potentially this will bring all sorts of horrors like wealth taxes, need to take a boat driving test in Spanish (maybe even your car test) , Spanish boat registration etc

Portofino - the boat will be on the coast - I'm thinking maybe keep it there for a year see how it goes.

does the 186 days a year have to be concurrent ? I am thinking of visiting for a week/weekend here or there really

thanks so far

The requirement to pay boat taxes annually in France is based either on registration of the boat in France, or residency of its owner. If your boat is UK registered, then there is normally no requirement to pay taxes in France, unless you are a resident (or have a place of residence) in France in which case you have to pay some taxes regardless of where the boat is registered.

Be aware that UK registration does not relieve you of the requirement to comply with French maritime regulations when in French waters. You will need to carry evidence of an appropriate qualification (ICC or equivalent is mandatory), proof of ownership, VAT status, etc. and also to comply with French safety regulations appropriate to your size and type of boat. I've heard many stories of owners being fined for not having all of the necessary documentation or equipment ... don't think that because you're UK registered they wont be interested in you.

You can spend as long as you like in what ever time frames suit you in France on a boat ( coastal ) ,being a Uk citizen you will pay no tax or be asked to relating to the boat ,if it's SSR or part 1 and flys an engsign .

If you own a property there's a bit of " fonciere and impot Kinda like our rates and a little wealth tax on foreigners if it's deemed worth than xyz € ( not sure of current threshold ? They phaff with it @ budget time ) .
The 186 / 6 month rule does not really apply in France .
Your tax domicile is your farthers and your country of birth and where your main economic activity is .
Not Necessary where you ( may be claiming) to be living .
I,am currently in Switzerland and have a residance permit - but have property in France and Uk and move between all three .
I spend the least time in the UK -but retain UK tax domicile status .
Don,t know much about Spain no reason to really visit .

Thank you for all the help that is really helpful.

I do understand and I am going to do the courses not for the benefit of any requirement but for my own safety above anything else - I work offshore and have seen a few scrapes here and there.

my next question is - is the ssr a yearly cost or a one off payment ? I am only asking this so I fully know what's involved.
