CO 32

We parked next to a French Contessa 32 in St Peter Port about 3 weeks ago. Obviously some frenchmen recognise good boats!

Re: CO 32

For once maybe you are in a minority. This is from the Beneteau site :

First 27.7 claims first European Yacht of the Year award
In the first of the new European Yacht of the Year Awards the Bénéteau First 27.7 was announced as overall winner at the Düsseldorf Boat Show yesterday. The awards, which have been established as a result of an initiative by the German magazine Yacht, were judged by the editors of 11 leading European yachting magazines .....

As for the new central cockpit Océanis 42cc, she has claimed 5th place in the 12 - 15 meter category.

Bénéteau Océanis Clipper 423, awarded twice in the United States
An independent team of Cruising World has named her Boat of The year in the Mid - size cruisers category. .....A point of view shared by Sail Magazine, that has included the Bénéteau Océanis 423 in its "Top 10" sailboats list for 2003. She therefore joins the family of many other Bénéteau models that have won the prestigious Boat of the Year and Top 10 awards such as the Bénéteau Océanis 473, Bénéteau Océanis 411, First 36.7 and First 40.7, among others.

France produces BOTH good volume manufactured boats AND high quality smaller sized manufacturers. (eg Wauquiez, Alubat, Meta, Garcia, Amel...

When are we going to get rid of the stereotypes?

John

Re: CO 32

Me in the minority! Not untill Benetau outnumber all other boats on the water/available.
But I get your point.I agree Benetaus are excellent at what they do,just don't ask me to personally like them or own one,or for that matter any of the other French makes you mention. They would not be suitable for my kind of sailing.I dont own a Contessa or a British built boat, but would take a Contessa anyday before one of the aforementioned modern French yachts of the same size.
The original point of my posting really was to point out the in my experience it is very rare for the French to own a British built boat .I think its their loss but you think there is no reason for them to do so.Fair enough.

Boats of the year

For your education, I list below some car of the year award winners. How many of these would you have been proud to own?

Peugeot 307 (2002)
Alfa Romeo 147 (2001)
Toyota Yaris (2000)
Ford Focus (1999)
Alfa Romeo 156 (1998)
Megane Scenic (1997)
Fiat Brava (1996)
Fiat Punto (1995)
Ford Mondeo (1994)
Nissan Micra (1993)
VW Golf III (1992)
Renault Clio (1991)
Citroen XM (1990)
Fiat Tipo (1989)
Peugeot 405 (1988)

Not a BMW or a Merc anywhere. Not a sports car amongst them. In fact (with the possible exception of Citroen XM and the Scenic) all very boring wheeled boxes.

Why not?

We had a superb Westerly 33 for 14 years which we said we would never change and certainly not for some flimsy French boat. We looked at a lot of S/H boats around 40' and saw a lot of crap (normal), had a hankering for a Westerly Oceanlord 41 but most had in-mast reefing (prefer slab) and after the W33 the cockpit was high, exposed and few handholds, also didn't like the 2003 turbo engine. The Moodys we looked at were mostly very tired indeed as were the HRs (except for their prices!).

Then along came a 1988 vintage Sun Legende 41, fitted for serious offshore/liveaboard cruising, did AZAB (6th) and 6 years in Med two up. Designed by Doug Peterson based on his Legende, French Admiral's Cup boat. This boat is seriously quick and a real delight to sail up and downwind, light and heavy weather and we sail as husband & wife crew all the time.

I don't care about the current Ben/Jen/Bav jokes, the laugh is on us because we have a REAL CLASSIC at a Ben/Jen/Bav price.

So there, I will brag about it!

So....... can you feel the hook in the side of your mouth? I wouldn't know a jenny from a benny or a bavvy, if one fell on me. But a 1988 vintage sun legende a classic? I think not, but lets not get into a classic argument, I was only joking!
