Hi all, We have decided to keep our Moody 27 in or near La Rochelle this winter as my family own property near there and a marina berth including electricity is less than £30.00 per week! So far we intend to cross to Cherbourg then to Guernsey after that St Malo maybe. Are there any ports that I should steer clear of, or on the other hand I should make a beeline for on the way down ? We intend to make a start in the next week or so taking three or four seperate mini holidays to get it there. We class our selves as 'competant novices' the boat is equipped with radar and a chart plotter with the relevant c'maps I have also purchased the paper charts (14 of them!) for the area. Any advice as alway's would be appreciated, Mel.

Suggest Cherbourg to Braye, then pick time carefully to go thru to Guernsey.

St Malo/Dinard good choice, in Rade De Brest, first place on right is Carteret, v nice and quiet, good for an over night but diesel only avialable with a french credit card or by giving cash to a local....turned into a mare for me, so went on to Brest.

Thats as far as my knowledge extends.

For sale, 1970 Triumph Spitfire, 1947 Lambretta, 1922 Great grandmother, PM for details.

Camaret in Rade de Brest good. Douarnenez also meant to be good though never been. Then Loctudy (eat at Hotel Moderne on the quay at Ile Tudy opposite), Benodet, Concarneau all worth a visit. Don't miss the Iles des Gelana ( although they can get a bit noisy and crowded in August) or the Iles aux Moutons closer to the coast.

Have fun.

Have just got back from a trip to St malo and back. Would highly recommend Dielette , 12 miles south of Cap de la Hague. Either direct from the uk or via Cherbourg. It has almost full tide access and makes for a good break before Jersey/St malo. We stopped off at the Isles des Chausey, 15 miles north of St malo (routeing east of the Minques) -which is a magical spot (although steer clear at the weekend when the crowds arrive).

Not sure how it would fit in with your itinerary but Tregier is well worth a visit. Lovely town and the best pizza I've ever had!

If you park at the marina - for once take heed of the pilot book's advice about the strength of the tides through the pontoons - I made a right embarrassing mess of it !

I like Lezardrieux in the Trieux River, Treguier, Port Blanc and Perros-Guirec (twinned with Teignmouth!) on La Cote de Granite Rose where the pink granite is spectacular. An up to date edition of North Brittany Pilot (originally by K Adlard Coles) will be helpful. Bon Voyage

If I may suggest 2 places to stop over and leave your boat on the way to La Rochelle.

1. Morlaix, gives easy access to the cross channel ferry at Roscoff.

2. Port Haligen on the Quiberon peninsular. Reasonable public transport back to ferry ports.

This would split the trip up into 3 reasonable length holidays with a reasonably capable crew.

Don't forget to visit Belle Isle, Ille Ras and Ille Yeu before you get to La Rochelle. try to enter La Rochelle by night it's quite spectacular.

The only way to go is by water

Thanks for all the tips on places to visit, they will be printed and then live in the pilot book, all I need now is some good weather at the end of the month. Mel.
