Going myself next year.
Strongly suggest "The Channel to the Med" by Derek Bowskill and "Inland Waterways of France" by David Edwards May as primary reading. Charts are best bought in France "Navigation Fluviale" but are not strictly necessary if you have at least one of the above books. I would advise getting the Le-Havre-Paris Carte at least though.
Dont forget you need to show that you have passed a CEVNI test and get your ICC endorsed. More people are being asked for it now especially in Paris. If you need further info PM me.

assume you have already addressed the CEVNI issue (i.e. special license for transiting the canals)

There is a free highway code for the french canals available from PBO <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.ybw.com/pbo/pboeye/alsace/cevni.html>here</A>

You can buy the French "Navicarte" guides via the net. They are printed in French, German and English and are quite detailed. We found them invaluable. Look also at the VNF website were (somewhere) is says about closures (for repairs and such)(I think thay call them Chaumage).
Make sure your boat is SSR registered and that you carry the documents: French Customs will fine you if you don't, and you won't get a vignette from the VNF without all the necessary documents.
