A friend has just bought a Freeman 22 mk2. The engine starts and runs fine but it idles rough and occasionally cuts out in idle but it will restart fine. It seems that its running a bit rich.

Anyone got any ideas on how to rectify this?

Cheers in advance

How long is a piece of string? What engine has it got, petrol, diesel........?
From your "running a bit rich" I'd say petrol. which I would hazzard a gues at being a Watermota based on the Ford Kent engine.
Just sounds like it need a service. Could be a number of things. What carb is it running?

Its the pre crossflow Watermota petrol engine with standard ford carburettor. It was fully serviced and winterised in winter 2003 and this is the first time its been used since

eek a side valve unit. If its the standard carb, which is basic, then reseting the mix is easy. You can do it by ear on those. Turn the air volumn/mix screw in until the engine "hunts". Then turn back out until the engine runs evenly at tickover.

The igniton system must be more or less spot on for this to work. If its been winterised and the fuel drained from the carb, have you checked that the floats in the chamber are actuall closing the float valve. ?

The engine still does it even after an hour running. Ill give at a long run on the weekend and it no improvement, ill try adjusting the mixture and see if that helps matters

Not a sidevalve, pre-crossflow is the pre Kent engine fitted to Cortinas & ANglias & Classics. Probably a 116E in Ford speak. Carb set up details spot on though.
Check ignition first though as V sensitive to points...

I thought watermota went from the sidevalve or inlet over exhaust to the crossflow lump. Its been so long since I've seen one!

A couple of things to check.
If the points have closed up or have dirt between the faces, this could cause a poor idle fault. Check the gap with points fully open on each lobe of the distributor shaft. Should be about 16 thou.
Before adjusting the mixture, remove the idle jet and clean. Its located behind a brass screw on the side of the carburettor body fairly high up. When you remove the screw you will find the jet is pushed into the screw. Pull it out and clean it with an air line or a thin piece of wire. Gently clean the the jet chamber and re-assemble. When the engine is warm, adjust the mixture as previously described.
