Freeing Stainless Nut on Stainless Traveller Rail

Is it possible to weaken the nut by drilling a series of small holes into it and then maybe increasing the bit size to join the holes up. If the traveler can then be rotated slightly drill the nut again in a different position and try carefully splitting the nut open by inserting a small chisel or screwdriver into the drilled holes and tapping lightly (can you get someone to support the traveler above deck when tapping ? If access is better from below it is also possible to drill up into the end of the nut.
and if (as is likely the thread is slightly damaged) it should be easy to repair it with a junior hacksaw on the bench.

Your biggest problem is that stainless can be difficult to drill although not always if using good drill bits and getting access to the nut.

Good luck
Pete
