This one has come up quite a few times recently .... not so bad - but honest for free charting prog - try Seaclear .... http://www.sping.com/seaclear/ ..... more chart formats accepted and actually a better display and facility ....

SOB is ok - but very restricted in chart format .....

OK - if you want to pay for charts ...

If you are paying for charts - then Seaclear again can be used as its range of chart formats is greater.

If you are happy to pay out on CMap NT - then fine .... but there are cheaper formats ..... eg £100 gets you Seapro lite + entire UK charts in vector, about same gets you Maptech Lite + a folio ....... both cheaper than a Cmap NT folio ....

You takes yer choice ... yer spends yer money !!!

Re: OK - if you want to pay for charts ...

http://mapserver.maptech.com/homepage/index.cfm?lat=43.6770342516&lon=7.30639393074
&scale=25000&zoom=100&type=

I found this but its really bad. Try looking up STOKHOLM i went to Finland then brought the map back to find Stokholm other wise it tells you it dosent exist! Its rubbish!! but the best there is yet

Oslo exists but not göteborg copenhagen and only the kiel canal not kiel!

Why cant anyone provide something like this even only on line but with a bit of detail just for planning. Haveing seen this i wouldent pay $10 let alone $134 fof a few maps, for planing i would pay $10 but the maps would have to be much larger scale

Is there really nothing anywhere online that can be used online or downloaded but then which will open and work JUST FOR PLANNING???????????

I have downloaded several "free" trials or demos non have worked at all, some even just vanish when i go find the download i have a choise of 20+ files but not one will open the application, I have c maps and heaven knows what by now all just so many useless bytes

Please dont say seaclear that has installed but its just a toy,

why cant anyone that makes programs make a really simple one that everyone can use like the one in the link but with a useable scale.FOR PLANNING

You have to watch the spelling of place names as depending on which country's chart you look for they frequently spell the names differently in their own language.

Who will provide charts for free ????

Whether planning or plotting - who is going to create a raster / vector chart and let you download free ? USA / New Zealand spring to mind - but sadly rest of world have other ideas.

Maptech Mapserver is not the answer - as that is a pay-for-chart service anyway - so not much use for what you are asking for.

I think it will be a while before PC charting catches up with various other PC disciplines ... but it's getting there.

Re: Who will provide charts for free ????

Id like to know where! So far i dont have any idea how to get to the baltic!! When i get there i will buy charts

Today i cant go along to my chart shop and ask for charts to look at before buying not only that if i only want a dozen then they dont order!

As for second hand my cousin proudly told me she had found! on this forum but it turned out to be just another rip off!!

How do you get form the Rhone to the baltic?? just give me a writen list to the north via the Rhine??From Lyon to Kiel Please E charts may be the future, but not yet for small sailing boats

Im just asking if you could give a direction here from an "E-chart" just a writen list.

Thats all
