Hello,
I have a BE4RCCS Evinrude outboard boat engine from 1988. I have fixed it so it runs :D but it has a knob that looks like a volume button on a radio and it seems to be out of order (not the radio but the button...) It's just turning without resistance. I think it's a sort of a mixture screw. I have searched the forum and got to threads but none have a working link to a free manual.

1988 model with integral tank.

There are two knobs. ??

One to the left ( your left) is the combined fuel tap and primer pump

Or is the primer pump separate ???

The other, (central) which I suspect you are referring to, is the slow speed mixture. Normally that only turns a fraction of a turn.
When setting the mixture you pull the knob off adjust the screw to give the correct slow running and then refit the knob in its mid way position. Once set correctly should not normally require and further adjustment.... some models don't have the external knob.

You'll not find manuals on line I'afraid but they can be bought from Ken Cook Co. at www.outboardbooks.com

Poor ( for this model) exploded diagrams at http://www.boats.net/parts/search/BRP/EVINRUDE/1988/E4RCCS/parts.html

Some of the diagrams for other 4hp models are better are better http://www.boats.net/parts/search/BRP/EVINRUDE/1988/parts.html but are probably not applicable.

Yes, it's the mixture knob I mean.

So you mean to actually remove the knob? "pull the knob off"?

Normally yes in order to set the carb up........ but if it turns full turns on this one perhaps its not necessary.

To adjust the slow running mixture screw on most most small Evinrude carbs you pull the knob off ( if there is one) screw in the screw untill it just gently seats then unscrew it 1¼ turns. (1½ ?? cannot access the forum I need to check at the moment))

Run the engine until warmed up, slow it right down to a slow idle then turn the screw back in tiny bit at a time until it starts to falter then back out to run smoothly.
( Finally refit the knob)

This E4RCCS is a bit of an odd one for some reason.. not the same most small Evinrudes

If you have difficulty with the idle mixture setting it'll probably be because the carb needs cleaning

BTW recommended plugs are Champion QL78V, QL16V, QL77JC4, all of which are inductively suppressed., or L77JC4 which is not suppressed.
Avoid resistor plugs such as NGK plugs with an 'R' in the number
