I only use a blowlamp now, so this is just a fire hazard rattling around.

Once upon a time (i.e. the 1950 and 1960's), the vagrants preference was meths. Ye gods the smell. But with Carlsberg and their invention of Special Brew eliminated meths drinkers. At least the smell went.

Probably the worst beer in the world; no, that would be Heineken.

Special Brew was specially created for Winston Churchill by Carlsberg, and I was excited to try it on tap, at the first port I entered in Jutland. Sadly it was unavailable, being much too dangerously strong for those descendants of vikings, who prefer Heineken Lite :wink-new:
Funny old place though, their queen had just visited Jylland, and some of her guard ( like our Lifeguards) were in the pub, in uniform, rifles leaning against the bar, rolling up an enormous spliff! You don't see that in Knightsbridge..

So it must have been around earlier than I thought. But beer in small cans only started in the 60/70s?
I'm not sure when it went into tins, but I have heard that Carlsberg have recently reduced the strength due to bad publicity, and gentlemen of the road are switching en masse to Tennants :)

I recall first beer cans it was Party 7 by Watneys' Red Barrell in the 60s. But in the 70's les hommes du rue started shoplifting for the Carlsberg Special Brew - a entirely new crime trend cos the Meths drinkers didn't have could shoplift meths in shops - which makes me wonder where they got them.

But to return to a nautical theme, I recall chum John showing me how to heat up a primus stove with meths on the Una B. I thought it the most dangerous thing in the world!

Lethal stuff, in daylight you can't see the flames.
Tenuous nautical connection: The Tottenham ska band Bad Manners, fronted by Dougie, a large gentleman of the skinhead persuasion, had a 1980 hit with their jolly tune, 'Special Brew' . Dougie had a wooden boat at Canvey Island, we did a bit of work on her in the 80's. We all received free Special Brew T-shirts!

We cooked on an Origo spirit stove for fourteen years in the '70s/80s. The memory of it brings tears to my eyes.

I now have an Origo stove with oven in an Invicta I bought for the Jester Challenge. The two top burners work extremely well and take no longer to make a cup of tea than gas. The oven may not be ideal for cooking bread which I mainly use one for as I tried a Fray Bentos which was nice and hot but the top did not rise and go all flaky. I normally cook a Fray Bentos for 35 mins next time I will try an hour.
