I own a Fred Shepherd design schooner. She's a well balanced perfect sailing yacht. Now I am trying to find information about her designer Fredrick Shepherd, the boats he designed and their drawings. Does anyone know if there's a book about him or other publicity, or a web site or some other listing that may help ? thanks all.

I am afraid I don't, but Crystal, whose owner posts here sometimes, is a Fred Shepherd design, one of several that are written up, with lines, sail and accomodation plans, in Uffa Fox's five pre-WW2 annuals - Uffa was clearly an admirer. I also seem to think that Fred Shepherd taught Maurice Griffiths yacht design, and I have an idea that Fred Parker suceeded Fred Sheperd in the same yacht design practice.

You probably know all this already, but that's really as much as I know, other than that it will be worth picking up a few copies of "Lloyd's Register of Yachts", which ceased publication in the late 1970's, because it has a very useful index of boats by designer and by builder. Fred Shepherd was a popular and sucessful designer of cruising yachts and a lot of his boats survive.

I'd be very interested in finding out more, too - the Internet is particularly sketchy about Shepherd. I can provide drawings, pictures and information on Crystal if it would help you (we suspect that Crystal may be the smallest boat Shepherd designed, and is as such an interesting study). PM me if you're interested.

Actually, following my previous post, I think that the ONLY thing I've ever found out about Fred Shepherd using the internet were all related to Carrina (brokerage sites, some 6 months ago).

Although there is now a site entitled "Encyclopaedia of Yacht Designers" which is advertising a publication which I will look into purchasing. It shows Shepherd in a simple phrase Selina King; 1870s - 1950s?

As you might know, Selina King was the yacht designed for Arthur Ransome by Shepherd, and whom I secretly consider something of a big sister to our little 'un.

There is a very good article about Fred Shepherd, written by Ian Nicholson, in the August 1996 edition of The Boatman.

I also am a Shepherd fan. Aside from the Crystal drawings in Uffa Fox's book, and the 54' schooner, the only other boat of his which I have seen is Red Quill, a 42'6" cutter Yawl which was for sale sometime last year. Also a Google search just turned up that a Mr. Warwick Gill made a model of Crystal "from original drafts by Frederick Shepherd." Any idea where he got those origianl drafts?? Thanks, Jay

Fred Shepherd was my great great uncle and I found your posting when I googled his name. I don't know much myself, though I think my relatives in England have some of the yacht designs. You probably know he designed Sir Alec Rose's The Lively Lady. Fred was 100 years old when Rose circled the globe in 1968, and he died within a year of the big event. Could you share with me any useful resources to learn more? I saw the note about the 1996 article in The Boatman. Perhaps I can find which drawings still exist.
It's wonderful to hear that people are still enjoying Uncle Fred's yachts.
Best wishes,
SaraV

Hello
I know it's an old thread, but I have a Fred Shepherd designed boat with original plans, and reprints of articles about him....
