I don't understand this forums preoccupation with this particularly nasty form of food but while in ASDA(For reasons I wont bore you with but I couldn't get to Waitrose)
I noticed in passing that they are selling these at 3 for £3.

Please note that I have no connection with any of the companies mentioned other than as a customer.(apart from Fray Bentos where I have no connection at all!)

info: Fray Bentos, Uraguay

Perhaps we ought to know more about the place?

I am astounded by this display of gastronomic ignorance. The FB is the gold standard of excelence for the evening meal mid-channel along with tined potatoes and green peas. This is almost a National Dish, created for us after years of research by those lovely people at Fray Bentos, and then canned in such a way to make a nice frisbee afterwards.

How could you malign it!

Pies are a way of life (viz. my post on 'where are you today'). Friday breakfast at my desk wouldn't be complete without one. Out here FB don't exist but they have been surpassed by 'Ponsoby Pies' which are epic - my favourite flavours being Lamb & Mint or Bacon, Steak and Cheese - tastes better than it sounds!

Colin. wash your mouth Sir. such heresies should not go unpunished, at least a 4" bar of carbolic, To malign such a mouthwatering epicurean delight as a Fray Bentos Pie, nay Creation, You are no gentleman Sir...

I have just come back from Asda having purchased 3 of the offending items for £3- did seem like a bargain. Have I wasted my money then? Or am I a real sailor now? Does it count if I eat them at home?

I Whole heartedly agree.
FB Pies, Especially the Steak and Ale variety, with tined potatoes are the nectar of the gods after a hard slog to windward.

Strange we do not seem to have them at home.
Then we do have a fridge there and fillet steak and the like available.

Re: ALERT!!!!!

I would love to experience the delights of FB pies on my boat.

How do I cook/heat them without an oven or grill. Only a 2-burner gimballed cooker.

Re: ALERT!!!!!

hee hee ....this is different! Found the following on an Eddie Irvine website ...."Eddie once shared a flat with a friend, Mark Godard, another would-be racing driver. Between them they couldn't afford heating. But, they never went hungry because Mark knew somebody who worked at the Fray Bentos factory, Mark only liked the puddings so Eddie ate all the pies!"

Anyways, reckon you should be able to rig up some sort of steamer contraption with a bit of nouse ! Leave the pie in the tin but pierce the top in several places or open all round the edge except the last inch or so. Place just above the boiling water so it gets heated by the steam.

God you boys!! No Oven... just two rings and a grill. Steam it in frying pan with hot water in (dont forget to pierce the top a few times) for about 30mins (dont forget to top the water up). Then take the top off ( no not yours...the tin) and flash it under a med ( no not a mediterranean) grill until the crust is nice and brown... Perfick!!

Re: ALERT!!!!!

To beat that problem , I advertised on the Wanted forum for an oven - and got one!! (Thanks Chris) Looks incongruous on a 22 footer, but boy can we eat. I estimate the oven, gas bottles, pies and other gourmand delicacies cost me about 1/2 knot, but who cares?
I suggest you restrict to FB puddings, and therefore can be boiled. (98% of the flavour of a pie in my opinion)

Now I know what you are all talking about.... certainly didn't have them on the menu at The Savoy, where I stayed on my last visit to London.. will ask them next time
