In a statement issued earlier today the MAFF together with the European Commission Fisheries Union have announced a total ban on the fishing for Fray Bentos in the English Channel with effect from midnight tonight.

This is being hailed as a huge success for GreenPeas who have been campaigning for a ban for many years due to the ever-decreasing stocks of this species, which is found exclusively in the Channel. There have been a number of studies carried out regarding the effects of over fishing and all have concluded that there is a real risk of the Fray Bentos being fished to extinction within 5 years.

Speaking by satellite link from the GreenPeas protest vessel Rainbow Glen Rosa, activist Jimi Williams praised his colleagues for their tireless efforts on this campaign. “This has been a landmark day for us and we will not rest until stocks are back to the levels enjoyed in the early 60’s”.

Amongst the many actions carried out by GreenPeas against the fishing fleets, one of the more memorable has been the placing of partially submerged 30’ shipping containers mid channel in the main fishing areas. These succeeded in destroying a large number of the fishing fleets’ nets and, with the resulting media coverage, bought the plight of the Fray Bentos to the public eye. A real coup was the concealing of the true position of the containers, which was achieved by the broadcasting of coded GPS locations hiding their true positions.

Whilst some Spanish trawlers regularly fished the area the main fishing fleet was Icelandic. A spokesman for Iceland, Dr. Jonathan Knickerbocker – Glory, issued this statement earlier. “This is a devastating blow to both our customers and our shareholders alike. However, we have taken the decision to mothball a large part of our trawler fleet and are pleased to be able to support this ban so that our Grandchildren will be able to enjoy eating Fray Bentos as we do now. There will be no redundancies as a result and all those employed on the trawlers have found alternative positions elsewhere within the company with a large portion going to our new Runcorn store. Profits may show a small decline but we are certain our new 2 for 1 frozen chicken offer will bring in more customers and help counter that loss”.

Back aboard the Rainbow Glen Rosa, Jimi Williams, brother of Hollywood actor Robin, and his multinational crew; Kenneth O’Twister, husband and wife team Thomas and Julie Tomeski and brothers Nick and Les LeGrande are currently mid channel preparing a protest against the import of nuclear reactors to Europe. They are awaiting the arrival of 2 Japanese cargo vessels; the MVs Matsui and Hinari which are currently bound for Cherbourg. Future plans for the GreenPeas team include a campaign against the barbaric treatment of the Pot Noodle species. Whilst fishing levels are not under threat following the implementation of quotas for pots in the Solent breeding area, the ancient method of preparation involving the complete immersion in boiling water is considered as cruel and inhuman. GreenPeas are suggesting we look to Yo Sushi for inspiration and eat the Pot Noodle raw after dispatching them humanely.

Reports are coming in that celebrity chef Rick Stein has removed both Fray Bentos and Pot Noodle from the menus at his chain of fish restaurants.

The price is right

Fortunately, I have a few which were captured before the ban was imposed, and which will now command premium prices as a result of the forthcoming shortage. These will be available to discerning trencherman, to the highest bidder. Do I hear 25 guineas?

Oh for gods sake. They are only using them for bait <s> Little ones get used for this all the time.

Co-op to breed Fray Bentos pies in captivity

The Co-op has started a captive breeding program at a secret location north of the border. The first pies are expected to reach maturity before the end of the century.
