I've been looking at the wonderful Francis frith archive on the www and came across this picture of a busy boatyard described as being below Marlow lock.

Is it the area between the bypass and the start of the lock cut where the 24hr moorings are? It seems so different almost unrecognisable if that's where it was. And where was the cameraman

Could be Wooten's but there is big hill which doesn't seem to be in the picture.

And the island close to Wooten's would show up in the photo I would have thought.

I suppose it might be Bourne end ?

Just gone under Marlow bypass and it looks like it is actually the area stated but just willows and modern houses where the boathouses used to be ! Well it was 126 years ago after all...

Its not on my 1950s Stanford's map and most of the old ones are on there so I guess it went in the 40s and was sold for housing after the war ?

Next time I am up there I will drag the magnet past. If it was a boatyard I will find things like boat hooks and rubbing strakes. And maybe some registration plates.

I don't think so - usually boatyards and boat stations on the Thames tended to be close to railway stations as that's how customers arrived. I think it is the bit between the bypass and the lock cut on the towpath side ie right hand bank going upstream.

That's about the closest the River comes to the station as far as I can see so an ideal location for a boat station. The picture shows skiffs which were probably for hire.

There's quite a bank there, so I'm wondering whether the houses were on the main weir side (where the Complete Angler is ??
