I have just had to replace the piston ring on my Mercury 2.2 ourboard; I was quoted £12 for a genuine mercury ring, but some digging in my old motorcycle parts bin has revealed that a Suzuki TS50X ring fits perfectly well, and costs £3... my motor has a 47mm bore with a 1.5mm thick ring.

Sadly, the gaskets/crankseals don't fit, so I still had to shell out £50 for them!

i may use cheap stuff on the outside, but inside gets the real thing, too much work, cost to repair, and down time at wrong time to take chances with make do ideas.

In what way do you feel that a suzuki piston ring is inferior to a mercury piston ring?

Both are 47mm bore, both rings are 1.5mm thick and both overlap the locating pin perfectly. I guess that you are probably not somebody who would change piston rings yourself?

i don't know, they may or may not be the same grade of steel etc. i just would pay the extra for parts that are internal and not easily reached. if i had a backup motor, then i might try the ring, but you will still have to pay the big price for the gasket kit to find out, if wrong...

I think at would be a great idea to have a thread which forum members could up date over the next years, with just such discoveries.

I for one am fed up with paying for ordinary parts that are priced for chandlerys,

Just one simple example, an ordinary radio a sangean sold in an expensive electrical shop in st Maxim for 98Euros costs 191Euros just 500meters away in the port.

The same goes for shackels, condensers impellers (for johnson)Mariner props, etc etc.and of course for simple things such as diesel fuel filters, oil filters,

A permenent thread for alternative, just like generic medicn would be invaluable
