When you anchor in freshwater after sailing at sea do the barnacles etc. die and fall off or do they just die and you have to scrape the bottom??

They stay stuck and you have to scrapem off dead or otherwise.
If you could find a river of dilute hydrochloric acid, then they would be magically dissolved.

Goose barnacles are such an expensive delicacy in Spain maybe it would be better to encourage them and make a bit on the side.

There's hardly anything to them, a little curl of soft flesh comes out the stem, its rather like picking your nose.
