Fouling in the Med

I had my boat lifted and scrubbed only 4 weeks ago following which she was achieving her normal max speed and rpm. Just spent last weekend on the boat and she's already lost 400rpm and 7 knots speed and the hull/sterngear are already covered in barnacles and other growths
Can anyone reccomend an antifouling paint which works in the Med and is there anything that can be applied to the props and rudders to inhibit fouling?
So far this year, the hull has been scrubbed by a diver in June, lifted and scrubbed in August and now it looks as though I'll have to do one or other again!

If the fouling there is so bad, why bother anti-fouling at all - just keep scrubbing off!!! assuming you have one of those boat scrub jobs

isn't your a/f eroding type? I thort it was. Or mebbe anuvver boat?

I was asking about here re ultrasound thingies - byron reckond it was cos the navy found there were no barnacles near where the sailor types had their personal radios up against the hull.

barancles can't form in 2knot+ stream, but no good in med.

So i am contemplating a dark skirt sort of thing to hang round the boat when in port suspendd from the guardrails and going all round the boat from about sea level plus a metre right down to nearly the sea bed with weights in the hem, but not fully decided how to do it yet.

No, my antifoul doesnt seem to be the eroding type. Also its white - does this encourage the b******s to set up home on my boat?
BTW is your boat suffering similarly or is it just LaNap? Interested to know if this skirt thing works

Nope, not just in lanap. Tho mebbe not in la rague? Dunno, not sure, worth a long look in various places. jfm's boat is in golfe juan, and he likes to use off-white antifould to er show off the brown streaks around the bog outlets BUT no barnacles afaik. Think his is self-eroding.

The black is sposed to be stronger, but mine is black (not self-eroding tho) and the barnacles love it. They also enjoy the slightly bronzified prop, yet i thought that copper was sposed to inhibit their growth

I'll try a darker antifoul next time. I've not seen any of those boat scrubs in the SoF. Looks like a business oppurtunity for someone?

I've arranged a diver just to clean the props, shafts and rudders but not the hull. How much difference do you think this will make?
I think a dark self eroding antifoul seems to be worth a try but AFAIK they're not supposed to be used on planing boats 'coz I guess it erodes too quickly

there might have been something wrong with the product or application, or both...

as a user of outstanding brand(hard type) , very satisfied with the results.

my boat is in the aegean waters since this May without any trouble.

some suggestions:

-choose a correct type (hard, self polishing, strong ,very strong etc..)
-check the production date /shelf life of the product
-follow application/immersion instructions to the maximum.
-do not let her idle too long...cruise....
-having a hard type applied, make scrubing fun as frequent as possible.

last but not the least:

in case of buying the service ,state yr requiremets......observe and control the application if possible.

wishing .... happy cruising without barnacles..

I live in the UK so I can only get to my boat about once a month on average so using the boat regularly is not an option. I need to find an antifouling that works under these circumstances. Having the boat scrubbed regularly is very costly - the last time I had the boat lifted and scrubbed, it cost me €700 and a diver costs €200 and then he does'nt do a good job

Re: Props calcs?

nah, the higher speed stuff self-eroding is fine, arie de boom use that.

I belive props ar the main thing.

as boat goes thru water hul walls slither so surface drag on barnacles. props also spins sideway. Assume prop spins at 28 knots = about 40km per hour with engine at 2800 rpm so say 1500 rpm on props from gearbox and diameter 400mmish circumf 1.4m, so prop tip speed 2000 metres/min = 2km per minute or 120 kilomtres per hour - three times the hull speed. At higher speeds surface drag will be proportional to square of the speed, so cleaning unit area of props is at least nine times more important than same area of hull. But of coursse there is more hull. But there again it faces side-on, not face on. Soo, i reckon cleaning props alone wins bout half the speed gain of cleaning the whole thing. Note the effect is reduced at much reduced speeds. Best option is to open all canvas and position crew on sunpad for zero complaints at 18knots and 60% fuel consumption.

Re: Props calcs?

Nicely argued. You also have to take account of the relative fouling of the props and the hull since drag will also depend on roughness. If you assume that the antifouling on the hull does inhibit growth, then the un-antifouled props will be more fouled than the hull and hence the roughness of their surface will be higher. So cleaning the props should theoretically have an even greater effect than you have calculated
