Foul foulness

St T has been away from her mud berth for all of two weeks now (from Medway to Brighton), so I was gobsmacked to see long (we're talking a foot at least) bushes of growth on the rudder, and also on the keels as I was walking along the pontoon studying her on Saturday. Very pretty really, but not ideal for actually getting any serious forward motion.

Is this normal, or do we just have truly rubbish anti-fouling? Did we actually apply pro-fouling, encouraging the stuff to grow at an alarming rate? I've just noticed that our log has stopped working too - is this likely to be as a result of the fouling? It's also worse on one side than on the other - an effect of one side of the boat spending more time in the sunsheeeine...?

Ideas, anyone?

I'm glad I'm not the only one!

In April, I had a beard all over the boat about 8ins thick - top speed 1/2kt, not to mention barnacles an inch across, 'undreds of 'em!. This was quite enough to hide the log impellor from any contact with moving water, so I'd expect the same for you.

It caused many jokes about the type of antifoul applied by the previous owner - Growmore and MiracleGro were a couple of the more printable suggestions

2 hours lying in the mud with with a jetwash and a fresh coat of Blakes Tiger seems to be doing the job so far this year for Portsmouth harbour.

Time to get down and dirty...

Last year "Two J's III" fouled up something awful. I always withdraw the log impeller when the boat is out of use, but that was a waste of time as the hirsute growth tangled it up as soon as I refitted.

We're down to the boat this weekend for the first time in 4 weeks (thanks to fitted kitchens etc. etc. Just hope we haven't got our own ecosystem to drag round with us for our hols.

When will we be seeing ST in the Solent?

Re: One sided growth

I scrubbed mine in alum bay with a snorkel and noticed the thicker growth was on the side in the shade - can't figure that out...

Went out in the yacht this weekend to test new sails and see if deisel problem had been fixed before the annual cruise ... a week on FRIDAY ... great. New sails were great, engine would only rev to 2000 / 2200! Complained Monday to mechanic, he believes that the problem is barnicles etc. Claims more and more are suffering mid season prop fouling ... is this the collective experience?
