Folks,

Just been thinking that we've had threads over the last few weeks about organising seminars at sailing clubs, hot topics for debate such as anchoring, red diesel, etc etc, as well as various efforts at getting peeps together for informal drinks....

Would it be fun to have a series of seminars and/or debates over the winter period to get forumites together, and perhaps organise it around a social of some kind?

Would be fun for example to get a debate organised on red diesel tax, and have well know industry folks speaking for and against?, or perhaps some (slightly) less contentious topics like mandatory training/certification etc etc?

IPC... what do you think?.... would make good journalistic content for your mags.... the readers debate?

The best seminar on any topic - bar none - that I've been to was the joint meeting of the Royal Institute of Navigation and the Royal Met Society at the S'ton Institute, on 'Weather and Sailing'.

It was so well received that it was repeated AFAIK in two other locations further north, and was 'standing room only' at all three.

I fancy that the keys to success were a) a topic of wide common appeal; b) a range of speakers each with something of value to contribute; c) a universal standard of courtesy which permitted controversy to mingle with dissent, and without rancour or disorder.

As designer Dick Newick famously stated "You can have any two - but not easily all three....."

I offer "free" talks to clubs.
The talk is called "DSC the Facts"

There is still a shed load of duff data out there about DSC.
This talk has had the once over from MCA, RYA, RNLI, and Ofcom so is about as upto date as it can be.

Has gone down very well and happy to offer that if it is on any help.

Best regards
