Why is it that the forum response speed is so painfully slow during the day but picks up in the evenings? Is it that other forumites (like me) are retired? Is it that they arent retired and log on from work at 9am and log off when they leave the council offices at 3:30 (snide but I'm still smarting from this years 28% tax increase)?

Or is it that the PBO corporate website is run on the cheap using the PBO corporate computer system as the server?

You should be seeing it much much faster now...

...since last Thursday when we fixed a lot of bugs in the code.

Database server for this forum (not an onld castoff Win95 box as it happens) is now not getting anywhere near max out -- and everything seems lightning here.

Some of the pages are pretty complex though...over 200kb in some instances if you like lots of threads served up in one page and especially if you use open threaded mode. So it is likely to be the speed of your connection having something to do with it I would guess...

Kim - I haven't been on the site for weeks - but it seems to be going quicker - that is until every few minutes it just comes to a full stop and just paints the headers and nothing else. Then it starts again 3 or 4 minutes later

Been seeing similar problem. Not frequently, but get header and white screen. Refreshing either gives same result or Server 500 error

It would seem lightning at your end as I assume you're reading straight off your server software.
I've been getting these frozen headers as well.
Are we, outside, trying to battle past the rest of the IPC website traffic?

Nope - our web servers are about 5 miles from our office on a different connection.

Kim - When I made this comment (as now) I have 10 forums open in Firefox. 6 motorcycle (all private individuals funding) 3 sailing and the Beeb. Without exception, page refresh on ybw is slower than the others often resulting in a time out. I dont see that that can be either my connection or pc.

Depends on time of day, hence my question. At the moment, its faster than it is during the day. Why?

There is less traffic in the evenings...

Having said that cannot be the whole story because we're not seeing time outs on any tests we're running, from here or elsewhere.

How many of the comparative forums use threaded mode and do you read these forums that way by chance?

With the exception of one oddball ( realclassic.co.uk) they are all in the same format as byb - threaded. Until you asked and I was forced to find out, I didnt think there was an alternative.

The length of threads seems similar - just looked at one on Visordown with 72 entries, but they dont seem to offer the " 1 2 show all" choice that you do.

And none of them, absolutely none, take remotely the same upload time. I've sometimes wondered if each YBW post is physically typed into another system for display!

Re: Okay, next question

Kim,

FWIW I find it exactly the same as Birdseye is telling you. I recently upgraded to a new machine with broadband, expecting things to speed up. Everywhere I go things are quicker, except here. Occasional "white screens" and frequent waits of around 30 seconds for a page to come up: it makes this site the slowest I visit by a long way. A pity really.
I've stopped visiting the Lounge because, whilst I'd like to have a quick look, the dross/quality ratio means that it can take many minutes to get to something that I would like to look at. It's like watching paint dry! Mind you, The Lounge may well be better off without me!

It may be something in the way I'm set up for this site, but if so, I don't know what to alter.

How many posts in total do each of these forums have...can you get a quick estimate off the main index pages by totalling whatever forums they are running?

Sorry to bug you with these Qs but useful to us if you can answer.

I'm not sure about how relevant these figs are in the sense that I dont know whether they are historical records or current availability. But visordown shows 1.94 million posts and 102000 threads whilst ridersite shows 54000 posts. have sent you a pm.
