I will of course bow to the forums burgee maestro should he not concur, but surely it is time for members of these illustrious forums (forii ?)to be able to apply for a forum Blue Ensign.

How hard is it really to get the official paperwork to be able to give them away, after all we are one big happy club?

Whom does one write to for permission?

Warants are issued to qualifying clubs by the Ministry of Defence. Permits are then issued to qualifying members.

The details can be found, by RYA members, in the on line version of the RYA Flag etiquette book. http://www.rya.org.uk/infoadvice/regssafety/flagetiquette/Pages/febook.aspx

Why not?

This forum probably has more "members" than any yacht club in the world.

AFAIK Blues are not available to ordinary yacht clubs or associations; they have to demonstrate some tangible, physical benefit to the Nation at large.

In the early days it was for clubs with some Royal connection. Latterly given for wartime service.

Methinks the same considerations apply to Reds as well, so it's not a snob issue (as some would have it).

Mark you it would be great fun (??) to have an unapproved Blue with a tipsy mouse tastefully embroidered in the fly. Not for use at Sea, you understand....

Are you suggesting that these hallowed pages don't [shock] [horror]
Does anybody seriously believe that certain snooty yacht clubs have any "benefit to the nation", any more than an exclusive golf club for example? Does any such club have to prove the benefit or risk losing their bluey? SO not. Jerry

A bluey ? Ha Ha no chance. May as well apply to fly a white one then you could look like those prats from the RYS who fly such large ensigns off the stern that they dip in the ogin.

In Latin maybe but according to the Concise English dictionary the plural in English is forums when the meaning is a meeting or medium for an exchange of views, or a court or tribunal. Fora is used as the plural when the meaning is a public square or marketplace, in an ancient Roman city, used for judicial or other business.

...does that mean we have to give up our defaced Red:eek:

I mean, C'mon Chaps, what quals/ criteria?
How many posts on anchor threads, Rocna's per boat, Scuttlebutt Cruises, people putting you in 'Ignore', size of Bavaria keel used as mudwieght.....:D

"Fora" might also come naturally to a modestly literate person, as the plural to "forum", prior to overthinking it.

Via romanis, Via victis

Absolutely right. For it to be forii the singular would have had to be forus. And even then it wouldnt be double i ( I think  )

Do you think this appearance of Latin on YBW is the influence of BoJo?

But they are there 'For I' to participate in:D

Remember, it's been a long time for most of us since "the Gauls have assaulted the camp with shouts"

I never could figure why they didn't use spears, arrows, onager bolts etc, like everyone else:D

Or Father Aenias began from the high seat " unspeakable O Queen is the grief you bid me renew" after which he rambles on for the rest of the book. I've had crew like that.

It's not about having to justify keeping it is it? It is about justifying one in the first place. There is a small club down south somewhere that managed it fairly recently simply on the basis that they were a club for the people.

Why should the grant of the right to fly a Blue or defaced Red ensign make a Club or even the wearer suddenly become "snooty"?

I dont think it makes the club members snooty in the slightest but it does seem to have an extrordinary affect on some others
