You may want to edit out a hasty remark. However if, in the mean time, somebody quotes you, the quote does not get edited at the same time and is there for all to see.

Just hastily read all the latest postings to see if I was missing something and then re-read your post and the penny just dropped.

The answer is to hesitate for a few moments with the brain in gear before hitting the submit button.

Yew may want to edit out a nasty remark. However if, in the greenwich mean time, somebody misquotes you, the quote gets edited at the same time and is there for all to sea.

That poses the interesting question to what extent one should really trust a quoted post as being the intended words of the attributed author

Not a lot anyone can do about it. All quote does is copy and paste into your post. It's not linked to the original post in anyway, so the quote will not change if the original post occurs, and it's not reasonable to expect it to do so - the software engineering to do that would be huge!

Don't see it's a huge problem. Usually plenty of people who will notice the mis-representation, not least of which is the original author who will have the original to fall back on (unless the rare instance it's been edited)

The engineering wouldn't be too bad if the forum used post references for the quote, rather than just doing a copy/paste into your post - the problem arrises when you start wanting to quote part of a post - I believe this is why forums tend to use the copy/paste method !!

Yes, but people usually want to quote a few words or lines, rather than the whole post, sometimes multiple times in a reply. There really is no point in quoting the whole text, as people can see which post you are referring to, so it gains nothing

yup - I was thinking of a way to try and get round that, probably by using a position reference & no of chars of the quote from the post - but then it would be tricky to a) make it easy for the user to post a quote and b) would need updating if the original poster edited their post! It would then be easier to do a word scan and update that way...
Either way - it could quite easily make a nonsense of the reply if the orignal post was significantly altered - from there it may be better to impose non-editing rights once the post has got a reply... all too much work for very little gain! The forum I run can stick with the copy/paste method!!

There is no easy way. It's actually a very difficult bit of code to write, and not worth the effort in terms of pay back

It's true that sometimes one responds with emotion to some of the sh-one-t written - especially recently.

It's then a question of putting a bit of water in your wine afterwards.

It is funny how some people allways want a second chance. Sometimes in this life you have to get it right first time. If you make a mistake just say sorry it is not difficult to do. What would god do if you kept on trying to re-write the bible just because you thougt there were some mistakes in it.
