Given its alu construction, /what kind of shackle should I use - s/steel or galvanised?

Also, anyone have anything good or bad to say about it? We've already bought one (FX-23) so am asking from a confidence point of view......and possibly whether or not to invest in another more conventional kedge......... [ QUOTE ]

I have the FX11 as a lunch/kedge anchor & as I sail on the east coast I sent for the free mud adjustment pieces(do they still do this) & was amazed when they arrived free of charge from America. It works well but make sure that you set it slowly as once it is moving across the bottom it can start to skip rather than dig in probably due to it's lighter weight.I used a galvanised shackle & have noticed no difference from my main system in terms of wear.

Either is ok, I usually specify ss for aluminium Fortresses. Aluminium, ss and galv are all compatible for that application.

Very practical anchor. The only issue is that it is quite light weight and takes some setting on hard sand and on kelp. Need to take you time in these applications but it is repaid.

Id counsel that you use a chain rode - at least for the last 10 metres.

galvanised , otherwise you are adding a third metal type to the system.

The anchor is in any case held together by s/s bolts. I think either will do.

We have a FX16 as a kedge and FX37 as a storm anchor. As has been said, set them very gently. The soft mud setting is particularly effective though i've had one hell of a job breaking the FX16 out of the bottom after a few days at anchor. It micht be wise to have a stout trip line to pull it out backwards.
