Hi.
Following a service, my 1800 XLD never reaches above 40deg, as opposed to 80deg previously. I have fitted a new thermostat, though I don't know what temp it is (and wasn't advised when I bought it...).
My temp gauge reads 40 and the calorifier fails to heat the water = no showers.Help!

Is the temperature genuine? At 40C you should be able to hold your hand on the cylinder head almost indefinitely. If it is too hot to touch it seems likely that the gauge is faulty and an airlock has been introduced to the calorifier loop when changing the thermostat.

If it's any help, the Ford technical specification states that the standard thermostat should start opening at 88 degrees C and be fully open at 102 degrees C. You can check the thermostat operation by heating it in a pan of water and monitoring the temperature at which it opens. Also, as vyv_cox suggests you should check that the gauge is actually functioning correctly as we have seen faulty gauges overlooked in the past.
