Hi,

I have a 1.6 XLD on my NB with a standard alternator driven by a 10mm, 3-ridge belt.

I want to increase alternator size and thought I would go for a Mondeo type with a 40mm, 5-ridge belt.

Does anyone know if the alternator will fit and most importantly, will the different crank pulley fit?

Many thanks

Kelvin

I have a 1.6 xld and having stripped it down to crankshaft level, I am sure the crankshaft pully forms part of the front seal. I can also tell you that the bolt which is used to secure the pulley to the crankshaft is a Torque To Yield type and should not be reused. But you cant get a new one. BTW, removing the crank pulley can upset the pump and the camshaft timing so be very very careful.

You would have to get a pulley off a 1.8 and check that it can be fitted.

Here are a couple of links to add to your reading list.

Here is a short extract from one of the above links by myself

"Removing the crankshaft pulley bolt is not a good idea. The pulley has the land area for the front crankshaft seal and removing the pulley will disturb the seal. Other issue is the bolt which holds the pulley to the crankshaft is about 20 mm diameter by 100 mm long and is of the "torque to yield" type and is a "one use" bolt and should be renewed and they are non stock. I had to resort to estimating the torque and used 300 nM. If this bolt is not tight enough, the loss of clamping force on the main gear will cause the entire engine timing to be lost, result, broken valves, damaged head, possible broken camshaft.

Not sure of your 1.6 but the mondeo crankshaft pulley splits, you don't need to undo the centre bolt. If you look at the mondeo crankshaft pulley it will have four bolts that bolt the drive pulley to the crankshaft pulley, check if your engine has these bolts. Does your alternator adjust the belt tension because the 1.8 mondeo has a separate belt tensioner, with alternator bolted rigidly to the block, i.e. the alternator doesn't move.

Hi Kevin, I just read your OP again and noticed you mention having a flat 3 rib belt.
The norm for the 1.6 XLD was a V belt so I wonder if the company who marinized the engine, fitted a different pully. If I recal correctly, the pully has a rubber insert which is a harmonic damber (WTFTI) Best to take a photo and send to Lancing but as I said, dont slacken the main bolt.

It means some engineering but a twin SPZ V belt will handle a 100A alternator, fit the new crank pulley ahead of the existing & if you are lucky the larger alternator pulley track will line up with little change to the mounts.
