I have just bought a Mcwester Kelpie, she is fitted with, what I have been told it is; a Watermoto single cylinder side valve petrol engine. I want to keep the engine, and would like to give it a good sort out. (i know, little strange by some standards and some people may feel that this engine would make an ideal moring anchor). However, I feel that it is well made and as it's the original fitment with the little Kelpie, I want to keep it. Any information would be greatfully recieved. Here's hoping.

Talk to Watermota at Newton Abbot. I have just looked up Yell.com and got the following

Watermota Ltd
Unit 2, Cavalier Rd, Heathfield Industrial Estate, Newton Abbot, Devon TQ12 6TQ
Tel: 01626 333344

The engines was called the Watermota Shrimp and has nothing to do with Ford. I am just going out to the garage where I have all the PBOs back to 1967 Volume 1 so if I find anything on the engine i will get back to you.

regards

John

Just back in from the garage. From July 1974 PBO advert on page 14.

Watermota Shrimp.
3 HP package for small boats complete with transmission and propeller.
Weight 60 lbs
Consumption 1 1/2 pints per hour
£198 complete NO VAT IN THOSE DAYS

I am sure the engine is a Briggs and Stratton (lawnmower engine) I have looked through the indexes I have for that period but cannot find anything in the 1974 or 1975 edition. Perhaps anyone who might have the indexes for 1973 /72 /71 might be able to find a listing.

Don’t throw it out, see if you can find an engine plate and you may be able to source spares from your local B&S distributor

All the PBOs since '67. wow what a resource, but I bet you are popular with your SWMBO. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

BTW a good way of indexing is to use the report search facility on this site, and it will tell you which magazine and even (for newer reports) which page

I have now been on the Briggs and Stratton website, it's very good and you can down load parts list etc. My engine is a B & S, the other bits and bobs are Watermoto. I intend to have it back in the Kelpie within the next 12 months.

The 1960 'Motor Boat and Yachting Manual, lists the Watermota Sea Urchin, 3BHP, 3600rpm, 1 cyl, 2.48" bore, 1.85" stroke, Weight 76lbs, Price £80, air cooled with reversing propeller!

I have found out that my engine is a Briggs and Stratton 8hp, 310cc single side valve. Parts seem to be easy to come by and American prices seem to be up to 60% or more cheaper than over here, there is a good shop on eBay; 'The Man's One Stop Shop' Ohio USA. My engine has a single speed gear box, and the drive and prop feathers for astern.
