I've just bought a 1978 (ish) Birchwood 25 fitted with a Ford 1600cc petrol engine driving through a prop shaft. Has any body any information about the servicing & parts availability of the engine , gear box etc. Thanks
Ford Watermota marine engines were usually based on the standard Xflow engines that were fitted to Cortinas. There are literally hundreds of sites dealing with all aspects of these engines. You should have no difficulty identifying the specific engine and getting spares through the Ford enthusiasts. Your only problem will be wading through reams of photos of Kevin and Debbie's restored 1978 Mk111, with raised suspension, dual webbers, 12:1 pistons, genuine fluffy dice etc etc - yawn!
Also, try searching Ebay for Cortina engine bits - you will be astonished what is up for grabs! But you need to get a definite ID on the your engine - not difficult once you find the right Kevin.
/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Hi mollyd. I have a Birchwood 25. The engine is the same as in the cortina and escort so spares are easy to come by. Sheridan Marine, Moulsford, Oxfordshire. 01491652085. are the people for spares, and manuals for engine and gearbox. This is the same engine and gearbox fitted in the small Freeman Cruisers. If i can help let me know.

What I could never figure out on my engine was that whilst I knew it was originally cross-flow the marinisation process it went through, (head change???) had inlet and exhaust on the same side - opposiite the plugs. Mine was direct cooled. Easy to service as it was just like my Ford Anglia super "e" model - now there's another story!
If the carb is the sided-draught solex model then we had heard, and indeed found with ours, that it was prone to leak.
The ford engine with the inlet exhaust on the same side is the earlier pre-crossflow engine, came in 998, 1200 and 1500 guises. It was the precursor to the crossflow engine, and was used in cars such as Anglias and the earliest cortinas
