I have one of these in my Fisher 37, 1975 vintage. The engine is fine apart from the fact that the bolts have come out (and disappeared?) from the oil cooler that bolts onto the side of the engine. My problem is establishing the thread size and type for these bolts.

As these were marinised engines modified by Bowman for Fishers it doesn't appear in the manual, which l have.

So how do l work out the bolt sizes/type?

Remove a bolt of similar size on the engine, alternator bracket for example and see if it fits into the thread that you are missing. ONLY USE YOUR FINGERS TO TURN so that you will not damage any incorrect thread form.

If it fits calculated the length of the thread in the block (blind hole) using a matchstick or paperclip and count the number of bolts you require. Allow for split washers or star washers.

Walk to the shop and place on counter and say you want x bolts with that thread yy inches long.

Get out your wallet and pay.

Walk out of shop with a smile on your face.

Into a block, due to it being a casting, it will be a UNC (Unified Course). Far to late to be Whitworth or Metric (60° thread form). It won't be American Fine (AF).

Just the lengths to worry about now.

and it needs to be made a bit slippery so grease is always good too!

I'm with them, UNC, Ford used it on all blocks through into the late 90's

Length, you can depth the blind hole with a small screw driver, take 3mm off the depth and add the thickness of the flange and add 2mm for an engineering washer, if you want to fit one. Put some thread seal on the stud, so it does not shake loose again. Alternatively get an extending magnet and find the old studs in bilge

Take another one out [ double nut ] and use it as a pattern in your local fixings supplier. NOT B & Q!
