ford mermaid turbo + problems

my mermaid turbo + is pumping out dark gray smoke when its under load, but when I open it up & the turbo cutes in the smoking problem seams to go, & when I slow down again the gray smoke comes back.

The work I have had done is: fuel pump & injectores, lift pump, turbo presure test, fuel presure test, exhauest & inlet presure test, the engine was run from a different fuel tank, exhaust back presure test, & every one of there has checked out to be okay.

this smoking problem came on suddenly & I have no loss of power or speed the boat goes as well as she did before.

can anyone please help with me problem?

Sounds fairly normal. Give it a dose of Soltron that should cure it. It did to mine.

Mack! If you don't get the answer here try the PBO Forum. In the meanwhile I pose this question to everyone "what has happened to our resident Forum engine expert, he seems to have disappeared"

mmm - good question Byron I was thinking the same.

actually - is it my imagination or is the "expert" advice getting less expert and more general - rather than specifc and useful - /forums/images/icons/mad.gif

Suggest you give Mermaid a ring and ask to speak to Chris or Cyril, they are always very helpful. Tel no 01202 891824

Could be Turbo oil seal as you've checked everything else that I'd have, apart from a compression test. Does it use water, run hot or anything else untoward?

Speak for yourself.....possibility that your level of knowledge has improved? I hope so as most advise I get still has to be deciphered.

Point is..you have probably become more learned while the forums generally are of a similar standard?? B1 believes all nonsense should be moved elsewhere..could that contribute to a general dumbing down.....\??

oooo never thought of that option. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

However I still say that alot of replies are often "I don't know the answer but you could be right" Well - IMHO that's a real fence post up the b*m type comment - just have look and see ...... /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif

Normally I'd say over injecting , yes you'd expect it to cause smoke to be more white !!.
Perhaps the phasing on your injector pump is out, and when you say the turbo cuts in it clears , all that tells me is it's then able to burn off the excess fuel because more air is being pumped through.
Has your injection timing been checked
By using a jam jar you could see how the fuel is being injected , crack an injector adjust pipe then making sure the injector is safely in the jar turn the engine over .
Is the spray pattern good with no breaks or spurts.
Is the break off point clean, does the injector end dribble or shut off correctly .
You'd need a test tube and stop watch but using this method all be it crude you could see if for example the injector pump was delivering equal amounts to each injector.
Also are the breaking pressures re the injectors both correct and the same .
Cheers

Mmmmmm, just had a look at a few requests for info, including my own. More than 1/2 are 'I don't know but...'... so your point is valid and correct. Each time there is always a couple of good (as far as I can tell) responses in that they apppear authoritative.

well actually I do believe that some of the answers could quite easily have a bit more detail and hence be more useful. For example in the Trailer thread the other day ... there are two answers "dont drive too fast" or "Keep under 50 mph" - see what I mean ???

If the turbo+ is the same as the Monarch there is an over fueling device built into the pump assembly and linked to the inlet manifold. Worth checking for correct opperation.

Smoking understatement

I have similar problems with a 212hp Turbo Mermaid (fitted 2001)
The problem has gradualy got worse.
Symptoms : very, very heavy greyish smoke during & beyond start up. (Exhaust discharge on water)
Checked as OK -- Compression -- Injectors-- Breathing -- Tappets --Fuel Filters changed.
** Just found that there is no excess fuel being returned to tank ?????

Possible causes -- Injection Pump -- Fuel Bug

Any suggestions appreciated as hoping for a smokeless new year.
