Can any one help please. A friend of mine is wanting to purchase a 2.5 ton GRP motor boat , 22 ft approx , which has a Ford Mermaid 145 hp Turbo 4 diesel engine fitted ,which is about 27 years old with 1700 hours on the clock. Could any one advise please as to how much diesel one of these engines would burn per hour at a good cruising speed , also whats the reliability etc of these old engines like .
Grateful for any advice on this subject.

Ours are 180 hp 6 cylinder, 1973, vintage, yours is like ours with two cylinders chopped off, BOMB PROOF, refuse to give in, easy DIY, and relatively cheap spares even new. But lots of stuff in breakers yards. If that engine had been on the road for 1700 hours at 60mph constant it would hardly be run in at 102.000miles

Ran one in a Pacific 22 rib for 5 years boat and engine 1981 vintage, only it had been upped to 200 hp by Mermaid. Used 35 lph flat out at 26 - 29 knots. Max revs are 2600 but Lancing Marine recon they are good for 2800. As Omega2 said, bomb proof.

Great engines.I've got 2 x150's turbo'd cica 1978. The only drawback is the smoking when cold, I get my ropes ready for a quick gettaway to save the embarasment.(fire Mr. Faulty -fire)

don't we all?? and start the radar before the engines.

The 140 turbo 4 in my CI 22 1979 vintage didn't smoke at all. Great little engine, used about 3 gph at cruising speed of about 12kts.

Thanks for your views /comments , was hoping the fuel consumption was a little better than 3 to 3.5 gallons per hour . Will give it some thought.
