Well I got there in the end and the engine is now running a treat. Basically there were two unrelated problems.

One of the injectors was jammed opened and this caused the air in the compression stroke in the cylinder to be forced back up into the fuel line and aerating the pump. Once I had the injectors overhauled at £30 per unit plus my donation to Mr Browns the engine was much easier to start but still cut out after about 10 seconds.

Next theory was that the fuel valve solenoid was not fully opening so removed the plunger and bled the system again with absolutely no difference. However on one of my “bleeding excursions” round the Fuel Pump I found a surprising amount of air coming out of the return line banjo connection so stripped off the entire fitting. It was at this point that a few neurones managed to make a connection with a distant memory (about two weeks ago) as how the fuel pump returns excess fuel back to the tank.

It appears that the centre of the banjo fitting is in fact a non-return valve and it was jammed shut. Bingo! Went to my spare £9 CAV fuel pump (from eBay) and compared the banjo fitting on the engine to the one in the spare pump and it was clear that the one on the engine had jammed solid. Replaced the banjo fitting and the engine started and ran and ran and ran and ran.

So there you have it, thanks to all who helped with suggestions, it may be that I did not need to have the injectors cleaned and they would have cleared and unstuck but I have a clean sweet smelling exhaust with no smoke or fumes (for a 20 year old diesel that is)
