Force 11 on the thames

Was in London on Saturday on a shuttle boat between Woolwich and the O2. About 5pm, went completely dark, violent squall, lightning etc. Only lasted about 5 minutes.

Captain came on the tannoy to announce that the Thames control people had confirmed near 60 knot winds and it was officially a force 11!!
 
I was just in the garden (near river at Greenwich) when that came through. The cats flew into the house, the shed rocked a bit. Land just isn't exciting compared to a boat.
 
Was that one of the tornadoes that touched down or regular wind?

Either way -- glad I wasnt out there!

We walked from Tower Bridge down to Limehouse at around 2-3pm on Saturday and it was actually pretty calm.

Think I'll avoid mentioning to swmbo;)

I was cycling along the Thames path between Hampton Court and Weybridge ...at about 4:00pm it went almost completely black, the wind blew like crazy, lightening flashed and it poured rain. Some of the c.15m conifers in a neighbour's house were snapped in two and the trees landed a good 10m from their stumps.

If I'd been sailing with a kite up I think I'd just have gone below and lit a Hamlet cigar!

How do you tell the difference??!!

I thought it was quite fun, my mate thought we were going to get struck by lightning and die! Slightly more worrying was the expletives and nervous laughter I heard whilst walking past the door to the bridge!!

We were in Greenwich Yacht Club and it was really strong wind, one of the boats on the moorings were flying all over...
What a wind and just lasted for about 10 minutes, I was glad we were inside with the beer
