For those who dont use the QHM website and get the automatic e-mails (see <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.qhmportsmouth.com>http://www.qhmportsmouth.com</A> ) this may be of interest.



1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN by the Queen’s Harbour Master Portsmouth that on the Thursday 25 November 2004 a routine exercise will be conducted under the direction of the Queen’s Harbour Master Portsmouth, to practice the response to a marine emergency. The exercise will commence at approximately 1120 and be completed at 1500 and will centre in the vicinity of Spithead No1 anchorage.

2. For the duration of the exercise the use of the Outer Swashway will be limited to vessels with permission from QHM only. No action or participation by the general maritime community is required, all assets to be utilised in the exercise have been informed if needed. Two “Wightlink” ferries and numerous port authority units will be involved and additionally the Search and Rescue (SAR) Helicopter, the emergency services and local authorities will all be taking part.

3. Mariners are requested to give all maritime elements involved in the exercise a wide berth for the duration of the exercise, no impediment of the main navigation channels is envisaged. In the event of a “real life” occurrence the exercise will be immediately terminated.

4. QHM Harbour Control will monitor and coordinate the exercise throughout the and broadcast warnings if necessary, on VHF Ch 11 additionally they can be contacted by telephoning 02392 723689 if further clarification is sort.

5. Cancel this Local Notice to Mariners on 26 November 2004.

Yes I saw that. I think it is an evacuation exercise for the Wightlink ferries. There was an advert in the local paper recently asking for volunteers to take part as ferry passengers. Packed lunch provided as I remember.

Took part in similar exercise back in the early 90's (god how did i get so old? /forums/images/icons/frown.gif)

It was quite a lot of fun...even with the wightlink lunch....well managed...and I even got try being airlifted by SAR.

Only problem was once the helicopter had half a dozen young women on board they got called out to a real emergency and had to drop us in the middle of the field at Dolphin...which involved being escorted through the base & onto a bass boat back to Vulcan...it did give me a hint of how it might feel to be displaced as it then took the rest of the afternoon to locate the rest of my party...

All in all, not a bad day out & if it wasn't for the chidlers at school I'd go again.
