Having done my first RTIR this year i was keen to get a photo of my boat in the race, it seems only one photographer captured us. I like to compsition of the photo but i am not to keen on the overall look, it appears to be very photoshopped. The photographer does not appear to offer an option of the digital image to change to my tastes. Are they any opinions on the image, i.e has it been made to look like this so that it prints better? sample photo below:

It looks like a combination of things - increased gamma/brightness possibly because the initial image was under-exposed; reduced palette; highly compressed JPEG.

Why not contact the photographer and see if they can provide a sample with better dynamic range and resolution?

Look slighly over saturated and contrasty (on firefox), but it's hard to tell because some web software displays the ICC colour profile, while others don't. A print colour profile is different from a dispaly colour profive, or even the profile the image was captured in.

Also as you can see from the posts above, taste is a subjective thing. the other thing to bear in mind is that prints vary from printer/process/paper/profile/chemistry etc, and you're seeing an image on a screen through transmitted light rather than a print which is reflected light.

Just a few thoughts to throw into the equasion :)

If you do get a print, ask them to crop out the end of a spinnaker pole poking in on the right hand side of the frame

I can't see your objection other than this file has been overcompressed and maybe he has tweaked the levels to give a bit more zizz as has been suggested. Is that so bad?
Like Snooks says the pole is distracting. In fact it wants about an eigth cropping from the right to put the boats in a better position. At moment it looks like they are leaving the frame.
I doubt he has done much more than some batch levels and copyright marking. Maybe if you order a print you'll get a better file.
