And yes I've had both.

In serious seas. Outdrives are never in the water long enough to get anywhere. Props on shafts nearly never come out.

Handleing shaft boat in a marina or where ever is piece of piss. Drives just like a tank. So dont look daft all the time.

Out drives by comparison drive like your pissed all the time!!

Outdrives eventually and often break, or leg flys up in air. Even harder to stear. Very expencive to mend. Or maybe need new ££££££.

Prop shaft knackered. See local machine shop guy. ?? £100 maybe.

Water ingress through bellows on outdrive. It will hapen some time. Terminal.

Water through stern tube. Normal, tighten nut a bit. but no problem.

Here endeth the tale!!

Depending on boat shaft will cost you 20% to buy than boat with outdrives. You can either pay up front or you can pay out later on outdrive maintaince. The choice is yours.I bought outdrives simply because that was what was available at the time with the money i had available.Rather have boat with outdrives than no boat at all.

Just hold tight dear it will not be so rough when we get round the corner, trust me.

Surely the number of posts from people who have had problems with outdrives and the costs involved compared to the number of people having problems with shafts must be somewhat indicative? ie F*$!!*$g V*lv*S etc.

Outdrives v Shafts

I keep seeing a lot of rhetoric on this issue, particularly on the economic elements but ahs anyone done a test of boats with alternative power options, in terms of running costs and maintenace. There are/ have been a number of boats with different options on the same hill.

Any comparitive tests?

...I wanna boat please..

I am with you all the way hlb, would never by a bateaux with outdrives, recipe for bankruptcy (spelling?).

Only thing in defence of outdrives is I think the acceleration and top speed is better (but delta is small compared to boat capability in any case, so only 28.5 knts instead of 28.7, who gives a sh*te), oh and they can dry out

For sale, 1970 Triumph Spitfire-sold, 1947 Lambretta, 1922 Great grandmother, PM for details.

Good point about being able to dry out. On the other hand the only time I dried out an outdrive boat was cos the outdrive fell to bits and I was SINKING!!

the issue is, I feel. a little closer when only one engine is involved. Trailers etc become a factor, the manoeverability is different rather than worse and the cost factor a higher proportion of the boat overall.
Two shafts and a bowthruster however would seem to be the preferred solution.
