Folly Ghost town

If anyone is going stir crazy, there's a nice walk on the public footpath from the caravan park by the Folly North into East Cowes, past Whippingham church and through the woods.

It's quite a long way, and it's a tad disappointing if a farmer has kindly left a bull in the field with the public footpath ( I suppose that's their sense of humour shining through ) but in general it's a pleasant stroll into town.

Not too sure in drizzle though, may be a case of getting an extra round in and some take away hooch to blur over / delete the afternoon...

Does the Folly still have live music on Sunday nights ?

You could ask them about the story of the place being built over the remains of a Viking longboat...

The Medina ...

We've found the Medina to be somewhat unfriendly in the last couple of years so we don't go any more. The Harbourmaster at Cowes (the fat one) threatening to issue a fine for a minor infringement without any explanation of what was the infringement was. I've since worked out what I might have been doing wrong but his aggression was unpleasant.

The charges for anchoring above Folly reach. We used to spend three or four Sundays each season either at the Folly or at anchor opposite Island Harbour and we don't now. I half expect that the next time I stop in Osborne Bay someone from "the Council" will demand anchoring dues.

Rant over.

L'escargot may correct me on this, but I have seen a photocopy of a chart which seems to show an area immediately South of Island Harbour on the East side down to Folly Reach (I think) that has NOT been leased by the crown to Newport council. I wonder if you could be charged for anchoring there? Been meaning to try it but work and home commitments mean I haven't been down to the auld tub recently.

I suspect it is a bit of a grey area charging for anchoring on the Medina. I think it is done under the guise of "Harbour Dues" - that's what they claim when they go round charging the boats that anchor up near the festival site. I would challenge it on that basis as I already pay harbour dues on my permanent moorings.
