Has anyone got a good contact for the boat name in polished Stainless Steel.

I was given Greens of Chichester but he quoted around £2,000 to cut the name of the boat which is 11 letters £181 per letter is a bit steep. I dont want lights and dont want it big, each letter I thought about 2 - 3 inches high.

There must be someone cheaper or Im in the wrong business.

Being involved in the engineering game myself my guess is that the cost is going to mostly labour......
OK thin 316 polished plate is not that expensive but when you consider that when you profile cut the stainless with either a plasma or water jet then each of the letters will need that cut face polished all around its perimeter or its gonna look shoddy!
So ok it may look expensive and perhaps is a little but it gives you an insight as to why.

Here is a contact: Boat Names

Half way down.
Stainless Steel Letters
or
Chrome stick on

I was quoted for 6 letters £431 back in February 2008 or £63 for Chrome stick on with a blue edge.

Letters were to be 200mm high

I went for the chrome stick on.

Hi,

I got some made myself (24 letters in total)....for... wait for it.....

...... ~ £130. Luckily I've dabbled with CAD so was able to produce 'DXFs' (basically files that contain the drawn letters / shapes). These can then be translated and loaded directly onto laser cutting machines. It was then just a case of choosing the right grade / finish of stainless (must be 316L [high end marine grade] - mirror polish - I chose 2mm thick) and then sending the dxf's out for quote...cheapest was £130 for our boat name three times (24 letters in total) about 3" high......wish I'd gone for a bit bigger on the transom though.

The laser cutting process leaves the edges pretty good (no real need for finishing) and it was just a case of sticking them on with waterproof, high performance, double-sided foam tape.

Sorry, I'm not voluntering my services but hope this info might help when getting prices yourself. It took me <1 hour to get the CAD files done from start to finish.

Chris.

I am Chris of the Green's of Chichester link mentioned at the top of the page.
For anyone interested in the fitting of top grade stainless lettering, lit or unlit, I am now dealing with alternative European suppliers and prices can be more competitive. However, like so many things in this business, ultimately, you get what you pay for!
