Folkboat

There is a very rough rule of thumb which says that the annual costs of a boat represent 10% of the purchase price.

I'm halfway through reading "North in a Nutshell" by Rozelle Raynes. She was a great Folkboat sailor [mostly single-handed]. The book describes her voyage from England to Norway via Holland, Belgium, Germany, Denmark etc. in her Folkboat, which had a Seagull outboard motor and oil lamps.

Reading it might inspire you to buy a Folkboat. If you are interested in buying it from me after i've read it, let me know.

But as you can see from the picture fore'n aft trim is quite sensitive especially if you get a few chunky folk in the cockpit.

If the original poster is interested, a young lady I know is just starting to renovate a 1958 Emsworth built Folkboat, a wooden one.

If it is in good nick you will get away with £500 pa (on a DIY basis) plus mooring, beware winter storage costs can be a nasty surprise. Upgrades, new sails and engine problems are another matter.
As for the performance, in my view - second to none - just about covers it.

It's 25ft3 so I think that means it is a true Folkboat, and has an inboard engine.

If it has an inboard engine, are you sure it is a Folkboat? I had thought that the only gpr ones with engines were the Varne boats, not common. The modern grp ones, made in Denmark, are for outboard, AFAIK

My first boat was a wooden Folkboat - sailed like a witch - didn't need self-steering, you could set it up with the sheets and go and put the kettle on! Trouble is you're liable to end up with a pointed head and pointed feet. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well, I'm so glad I asked! I'm really impressed with the simplicity of the Folkboat, I'm hoping that this will be a good boat to learn on for that reason, both in terms of sailing and maintaining. We're a family of four so it's going to be cosy, but I for one can't wait to get out there! Thanks to all for your thoughts, I'll still be reading the thread to see what develops. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
