Folding lobster pot

That is my Christmas present sorted then. The pot I am currently using used to live in front of the mast and is a handy place to sit when sorting out reefing lines etc in lumpy seas. Despite repeated requests to one particular friend not to use it (he weighs 15 stone +) he has managed to squash it badly. The new one will live somewhere else !

fwiw, the best pot I ever had was found on a storm beach on Canna, it looks exactly like the pots on the Gaelforce site with the soft entries, unfortunately it got banned from the boat because of rust and none of the 5 or 6 pots I have had since have performed as well as that one. Have no idea why some work better than others but they do .....

If your fishing Lobster you need to let the creel soak for a couple of days. Also depends on the ground. Lobsters prefer harder ground or mixed ground with lots of hiding places whereas crabs are quite happy on sandy open ground as well as in good cover. It is illegal to keep berried (egg carrying) crab/lobsters and Lobsters with a v-notch in the tail should be thrown back. Obviously there are not the checks on leisure fishing that there is on commercial but it is good practice to not damage the fishery by taking under size and berried catches. Round here the lads usually bait with fish carcasses that the processors have left over after filleting or with imported frozen bait.

My dad has a number of pots and to be honest the best bait is rotten fish. I mean absolutely ****ing stinking. He gets a good fertiliser bucket and chucks in what he doesn't want from fishing trips (not sure if he guts them) and outs in loads of salt. He could still be using last years bait the following spring. You obv need a strong stomach but it definitely works!

He sets them on the edge of rocks / plateaus at low water in maybe 10-20 ft. Been at it so long now we both know the good places round our area.

Hauling up can be messy work as well remember!
