during our summer cruise we got caught in thick fog for several hours whilst crossing from cherbourg to dieppe. Thankfully, we have radar. On arrival in Dieppe, i found that my stainless steel fittings had weeped rust stains all over the hull and deck. These were removed without too much difficulty, but can anybody explain this phenomena?

I think its what the Fish Canners ( and processors) call "water wash". Lubes and greases can be bought that prevent this.
