Our Icom 601 VHF has the ability to automatically send out fog signals. For the smokers on board this could avoid some embarassing wheezing and coughing whilst blowing Mr Trump. Has anyone used this functionality on their VHF set and if so do you have any comments/suggestions? What speaker/megaphone did you install on the mast?
Many thanks.

Not used the fog horn function, but have wired it up to an external speaker and works well... I've been looking in RS components for a waterproof speaker that is small enough to tuck under the radar, and amplifies enough.

We simply asked for a mast speaker when we bought our ICOM 601 and it's worked fine - but not yet used in anger!

Just an idea for location that won't suit all - but we're doing this right now.

As our horn is quite large and we did not fancy the looks or windage of it up the mast or on a spreader - we're having ours mounted under our anchor locker lid!

May sound strange but 100% past use of fog horns have been when motoring so lifting the lid (which exposes the then front facing horn) is a simple task to project maximum volume. And if we are sailing with the lid down (where it still sounds LOUD) - it is guaranteed to force all crew on deck as lookouts!
Cheers
