Whilst the mast is down I'm considering putting a speaker in to link to the fog signal generator on the icon VHF. Does anyone have any thoughts about proximity to the radar? I know there is a big magnet in the speaker but will it interfere with a radar? Also, has anyone else mounted on a of these? How did you do it? Did you just drill and tap a spreader? All help gratefully received.

Although on a serious note, handy to save keep having to repeat signals. Someone might think there's a Thames Clipper in the distance with all the funny beeping noises some of the dedicated units make.

My old ic505 was connected to a speaker when I bought my boat but it was broken so I removed it and didn't replace.

Check in the manual what impedance it requires, and match that with the new speaker, probably 4 or 8 ohms.

I have one of Standard Horizon’s supplied speakers mounted directly under my radar - the body of the speaker is actually tucked in between the legs of the radar bracket so that the mouth of it points forward and slightly down. I’m not aware of any reason that the speaker might interfere with the radar nor vice versa. I bent up some little brackets from stainless strip which slipped onto a couple of the bracket’s existing screws.

I can’t really see myself using the loudhailer facility, but it’s useful to be able to switch on the fog signals and then concentrate on lookout and navigation.

Sailing around Gib gives a healthy respect for fog, it comes in at the drop of a hat at certain times. My SH radio with attached external speaker is a boon then. Just switch it on and it gives auto appropriate signals and is one less thing to worry about.
