Anyone know what it is? Buying the plastimo refills could get quite expensive given how long they last!

You might like to try an air pump from car air horns running on 12v. Or try an old gas cylinder filled with a air from a car tyre inflator air compressor.
As said the best way to store a lot of gas is to use a gas as a liquid that has an appropriate pressure at room temp as it evaporates. Some hydrocarbons have this characteristic ie a gas liquification / evaporation pressure of 50 odd psi at 15 degrees C. A higher pressure would require a reinforced can a lower pressure not make a noise. Although temp would make a lot of difference. (I am guessing)

Look up the Ecoblast air horn. You pump it up with a bicycle pump (supplied) and hence the compressed gas is air! Available from Gael Force.
Performance at least equal to non refillable canisters.
