Hi,
How effective is the foam backed headlining Vinyl as seen on hawke house, I'm planning to get some to insulate the deckhead on my boat to try to impede condensation and maybe even keep the cabin slightly warmer :)

Thanks Jack

Insulation... marginal at best, its not insulating material as such. Like lots of stuff sold to yachties you've got to cut through the **** in the blurb. If you were to put it on 4mm ply panels and then some 12mm foiled insulation material behind the panels you'd get some improvement. Don't forget it is vinyl though and condensation will form on it.

The best way to 'impede condensation' is to increase ventilation.

Of course that runs rather counter to 'keeping the cabin warmer', but it will always feel chillier if it's damp, and you can get you warmer without necessarily getting the cabin warmer. (I find a blanket over the legs makes an amazing differrence to how warm I feel when sitting around on the boat.)

I spent the winter ripping out the old foam backed vinyl and replaced it with their closed cell foam (sticky as hell) and carpet stuff.

As someone who's got to renew that whole nightmare on my new boat I'd say it's worse that useless as a solution & people who use it should be shot but I'm trying to be at my best diplomatically :D
