Came across this app for Ipad & Ihone

http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/marine-uk-ireland-hd-gps-map/id388100245?mt=8

Flytomap GPs navigation app £20.99 The application downloads the charts for the whole of the UK and Ireland inclusive in the price . I took a chance and installed the application and it is surprisingly comprehensive . The charts are reported as being 2011 and they are compressed quite notably although all of the maritime information appears to be intact and accurate , some of the land based information is not quite so comprehensive .There are no tides or tidal current information . The position can be overlaid with Google maps or their own charts If you want to use a data connection . I imagine this could be of use at some stage .

The application works offline provided the GPS is installed and is quite basic in that it has the main functions , obviously your position , speed and direction , distance to waypoint, The ability to put in limitless way points , zoom & pan. Tap the screen for information at that point There is no onscreen distance measure although you simply can use an instant new destination which can be instantly cancelled this gives distance and course and route recording/saving & reloading.

Being only a simple interface, it is quite easy to use .

It uses GPS Coordinates in degrees minutes and seconds which has to be noted . If you forget it puts the position out by a few hundred yards each time if you're entering your own way point positions. There are a number of downloads of different parts of the world the only thing I did incorrectly at first was to download the application for the Iphone Which is £6.00 less expensive , still works on the Ipad But does not fully fill the screen .

They do a free version but this is unable to download full UK charts and the charts that are available for the UK on this one are limited and disappointing Do a search using FLYTOMAP in the Istore or online and get the HD version

Beware anyone thinking about downloading the Android version of this app if you have a Nexus 7 (the latest Jellybean version of Android). The main navigation menu / wheel doesn't work at the moment. I bought the Solent version of the app for £3.99 which covers roughly Christchurch to Littlehampton but it's unusable at the moment - so not quite the bargain I thought. They are working on a fix apparently

Ended up going with memory map instead (all UK and Ireland 2012 UKHO charts for £25) although there are a few glitches with this as well with the Nexus 7 (see seperate post today) although the app is still usable and good value for money even with the glitches.

I was also under the impression that the MM charts were 50 quid but when you download the app and access the map store via this the price is 25 quid for the single device option. I think the 50 quid version allows you to install the charts on your PC as well as your mobile device / tablet

Most chart programmes whatever their use are based on Admiralty RNCs that is digital images of paper charts.
As such personally I am very cautious as to their up to date accuracy as I do not believe that software providers pay the admiralty to get the latest versions on an annual basis.
I know on Ordnance Survey derived maping programmes that our house is not shown despite it having been on the origional Ordnance Survey for 150 years.
Similarly Arisaig Bay is often show large scale despite the most recent chart being dated about 1880!

I can personally vouch for Visicharts and Memory Map (although the latter were very tardy in issuing the 2012 edition charts, it took them until early August)

Visicharts clearly watermark each chart image with the date of issue, Memory Map date stamp the entire chart bundle. Either way, it's easy to check you've got the latest charts

Nice Viewer

I read the thread so i just register to tell my experience with Flytomap.
I have a flytomap all in one on my iPad and a cartridge installed on my HDS plotter on the boat as well.
They both work fine, the cartography is coming from Admiralty and seems upadated to 2012, however I would like more functionalities on the app, like syincing the route the markers and waypoint with my plotter. I was able to load on the flytomap viewer.flytomap.com but I am not able to link to the HDS plotter all my data.
Someone can help me on this?

When I fist discovered this as an Iphone app it was excellent and had the full charting built in. Now the latest off-line chart is very limited, not showing any real detail in the Clyde area where I sail. OK you can use the on-line chart if you can get a decent data signal, but I find the on-line chart colour scheme harder to read and that option is no good without a signal.
I have since bought the Imray program for my Ipad, again I think the charts are not as legible as the old Flytomap off-line chart which was as good as the Hydrographic paper charts, but it will have to do.
I was tempted to try the Memory Map App but I have seen too many complaints of the program being buggy so I ended up getting a decent plug in GPS for laptops etc. and am probably going to switch back to Seapro Lite, at least until Flytomap bring back a decent off-line chart.
By the way, it isn't just the Ipad version which has now got the limited off-line charts, the Iphone version now crashes if you try to zoom right in to see bouyage using the off-line chart. Everytime you start the programme it asks if you want to download a chart and then won't let you download any of the UK options. (Well it wouldn't last time I tried)

Hi, my name is Claudia and I work at FlyToMap, customer support department. I'm replying to your post to confirm that we are working to solve the problem and to announce that the fix will be available shortly.

Can't say as I've come across any bugs and I've been using Memory Map on the smart phone and laptop all summer as my primary navigation tool

Being able to create routes on the laptop and (relatively) easily port them onto the phone which can then be used as a chart plotter has been very useful (we only have a basic GPS) and on a small boat like ours it doesn't really matter than the phone is down below 'cos down below is easily visible from up on top!

I've also got Navionics which, apart from being a very handy source of short term tide and tidal stream data I find absolutely rubbish for actual navigation

Can only say that following a minor criticism about the simple interface & no measure for on screen point to point & letting the developers of Flytomap know to which Claudia responded by saying they would look into it, they have just updated the application free of charge & it downloaded to Ipad automatically.
This is the Flytomap UK & Ireland HD app. on Itunes.
Fro my point of view a good app.

Hi, I'm replying to your post on behalf of FlytoMap customer support department.
Unfortunately, Uk charts are subject to UKHO copyright and we cannot include them into the free download of All in One.
Uk&Ireland maps are available on the store as single package or as inapp purchase in OnebyOne (please note that for the ObO we do not provide free downloadable offline chart).
As for the colors issue, they make the chart actually hard to read at sea, especially the blue shade on the water when it becomes black. We will try to improve the chart in future releases.

That is really good service! If they can restore the standard of the offline chart so that I can use it to navigate around the Clyde area again I will be happy to start recommending it the way I used to. Here's hoping!

Thanks for your response, when I get time I will download the UK charts, I presume the chart package is available through ITunes? or could you provide a link please?

Many thanks for your on-line support!

Well, I looked in the Watermap app, there was a big list of maps but none were British. To get UK charts I eventually bought the UK Ireland HD package. Another £20.99 on top of the FlytoMap all in one HD which I already had. Oh and the original Iphone version which I have had for quite a while.

Now tweaked colours are all that's needed! I can't wait!

Oh yes, and some sailing weather before the end of the season would be good!
