Flybridge only boats to cope with British weather

Lets be honest, we have just experienced a typical British week end of weather.

Which boats actually had a comfortable week end ?

We were scheduled to meet up with two 'sports boats' 34 ft and 41 ft, one came to enjoy the spacious warm comforts of our small Flybridge before giving up and heading abroad.

We cast off from the Flybridge and then my wife and daughter went below after an hour or so, it was cold but neoprene gloves and woolly hat made it fun, just like cruising up North in August !

How about the 'Broads boats' (enclosed wheelhouse types) Nimbus, Aqudor, sealine Hard tops etc ?

Certainly wasnt the Raggies, I didnt see one out, so much for 'we like a blow' /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

No, this wasnt typical weather at all. If this was typical weather, who would bother owning a boat...

agree with gjgm, it was not what can be considered typical easter weekend weather, as,

A, it was three weeks earlier than last year, (and who the hell keeps moving the dates anyway?) and

B, flurries of snow, hailstones, and freezing temperatures, still don't add up to a typical English weekend,those conditions shouldn't arrive until August /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

We have occasional jaunts on weekends like this, but the River is quiet, the Lock-keepers morose, boards red and flora/ fauna rather sparse, and stayed at home this weekend. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I meant to include them with the enclosed wheelhouse along with Bayliner Trophies etc

The Hard top sealine is only semi and leaks more than the open version /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hi gjgm and dbrown,

I think as global warming increases (not starting on man made or natural) we are going to see more changeable weather and I think the Flybridge and enclosed wheelhouse boats will be able to take better advantage of weather windows.

Ricks epic Easter voyage a classic example.

with a flybrdge when the sun does shine at least you can take full advantage and helm in the open , best of both worlds /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

oh perlease.. dont tell me the reason to have a flybridge is due to changing weather patterns, week by week. If your timescale is tens,hundreds, or thousands of years, maybe. Not one weekend in March /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I was still in my twenties when I got my first flybridge, I had worked hard all my life and felt I deserved a Little luxury......... that is not old , come on spill the beans, are you too fat to manage the steps /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

We did Lincoln to Farndon and back,your old stomping ground

out of Torksey I got my first and not the last facefull of Trent

There were 9 of us,3 sports boats and the rest Hard tops

The good news was that we missed the blizzard yesterday

We did Farndon to Nottingham and back. Seemed to miss all the snow (what snow?) and we were only a few miles away.

It was lovely and cosy in the wheelhouse, I was testing my new 8kw engine cooling water heater. I must say it did look cold outside though. SWMBO looked frozen stood on the decks as we came into the locks...

Saturday afternoon, wheelhouse to get gas, more fun than by car! Thawed out wiht brandy. later, command bridge with covers up. Thawed out with big soss cass and Porto.
Sunday command bridge with covers up, big curry session
Monday, command bridge, covers down and snow + hail etc. Us Thames lot are hardy souls

I would love a Flybridge.

The Sport cruiser was like a ragtop car, lovely when sunny, pants when raining or cold, the Birchwood is very much more traditional to helm, but a little remote from the action, but the all round appeal of a Fly is unbeatable.

As an aside Swmbo bought me a sealskin"silly hat" that I said

Hmmm.... pls explain why you drove from the roof rather than from the warmth, comfort and company of the inner helm.

Headed out on Thursday before it got really cold, posh restaurant Friday night where the jetty threatened to dismantle itself, 2 nights in Windsor on the way home with SWMBO on the front holding the ropes in the snow on the way. Monday cruising along to Staines in the snow and more cold for SWMBO, but never had 1 complaint as just so nice to be out on the boat!
