Thanks for all the input. It has given me some good pointers. I have been told that the water pump can leak air thus breaking the vacuum necessary to lift the water. A new pump is circa £135 plus VAT so before going there I will ensure everything is air leak free, like the face plate, water pipe, impellor etc etc.
If I could encourage you all to take part in a good hale and hearty finger crossing session we might just be OK.
In reality though I suppose that as the wqterline is near the top of my engine then when afloat the water should just rush up the pipe leaving only water circulation to the remit of the impellor.
We shal see.
Ready now ---- fingers CROSSED.
Ta.

Yes, the water would normally fill up to its own level. On a Yanmar installation, running ashore from a bucket if it were on the floorboards it consumed a quarter of its proper rate - as when the bucket was raised and a syphon started!
