Can anyone recommend a set of flush muffs for my Mercruiser 3.0L with Alpha Outdrive?

I'd heard that not all flush muffs will cover the intakes correctly, so want to make sure I get it right first time.

I'm a 'quality rather than cheap' chap, so don't mind spending a bit more to get the proper job.

Some Merc outdrives have, on top of the "normal" side intakes, a so called low water pickup.
It's meant for installations on very fast boats, with an aggressive X dimension (=cavitation plate much higher than aligned with the keel, as it normally is).
You can recognize the low water pickup by some small holes on the tip of the nose cone, though I actually think (but I'm not sure) it's only available for Bravos, and not for Alphas.
Anyhow, if you don't have that - and it's very unlikely, on a 3.0+Alpha setup - any muffs will do.

I wouldn't worry about needing to have muffs that cover all the slats, plenty of water will still enter the drive. what's more important is the confidence that the muffs don't fall off when you're up top checking things over in the engine bay or at the helm. Better to get a set like this for that reason as it has a securing pin that is inserted through the drive to ensure the muffs stay in place

I wouldn't get this type as they can become dislodged and then you're in real trouble with no water entering the drive at all

Clever stuff, I never saw it before.
In fact, I always had someone keeping an eye on the muffs while rinsing the engine, when I had outdrive boats.
Just curious, do you know if it's supposed to work with all legs?
I would have sweared that I couldn't see through the side intakes, in my last Bravo I outdrive boat...

I'm not sure to be honest as I've only ever used them on Alpha gen 2's and my volvo dp290 drive, This Ebay advert does suggest extra kit is required for certain Bravo drives: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Quicksilver-Flushing-Kit-Muffs-Mercury-Mariner-44357Q2-/151201020024

We just use the standard muffs at the bottom of oGaryo's pictures. No problem with fitting and, as has been stated, someone should be watching anyway (if only to tell you that water is coming through the engine correctly and to tell you when the water is running clean and warm i.e thermostat is open and engine is flushed through)

You get a free set of muffs with my boat that is currently available ;)

Same here Martin, in fact they require a fair bit of lateral pressure to slide on and off.

As a precaution, the hosepipe on mine is threaded in behind the trim-tab ram before attaching to the flushing muffs, to eliminate/minimise any extra weight on the muffs.

Never leave the boat running unattended while flushing the engine (some go inside for a cuppa?!) as the hosepipe can also 'release' itself from the tap end as well, so don't compromise with cheap hose fittings.

A new option available.
