Look at Vara's idea. That is the proper way to do it with the ability to tighten down onto the surface as required.

Suitable mounts are made for VHF radios (at least from Icom) so they may well work for you. Just have a look at the accessories advertised for a fixed radio and you should find them.

Yes, the panel is removable.

I'm currently thinking along the lines of chipboard fixing blocks:

Drill out the centre hole to M8 to fit the screw on the unit, tap the other two and insert machine screws to bear on the panel.
