Florida Keys for Easter

Do you research. Key West is one of the worst places to go.

Everyone drives straight through the decent islands in a rush to get to Key West.

That’s said Key West at the end of Oct is pretty bonkers. Just google it.
 
Key West is the gay capital of Florida but don't let that put you off. There will be loads of rental properties down towards the keys on the mainland to also consider which could be cheaper at that time of year. (you will never be far from a boat rental place) The weather at Easter will be great too.
I used to live in Florida and used to fly to Key West all the time (my job, not gay)

Point being Nigel? Maybe i was countering Time Outs reply of Key West being the "worst place to go" and got it wrong? Do not make assumptions, I am probably one of the younger members of this forum where being gay isn't a problem for me. I have spent many an hour in Key West airport waiting to fly home so people watching becomes a past time. Being homophobic isn't the way I roll ;)

Not marking any assumptions - you did tho’, in your post.
‘Key West is the gay capital of Florida but don't let that put you off’ assumes that the OP might be but off by the community dynamic in the area.
‘My job, not gay’ assumes that someone might care about your own gender bias.

So no, not making assumptions just observing that it’s 2018 and you leading a response with ‘don’t let the gays put you off’ and punctuating your comments with ‘I’m not gay’ is an outdated attitude with regards to what you feel might be important or relevant information to the OP or readers of the thread.

I’m sure you are not homophobic and I’m sorry if you feel that I implied that in my post, and sorry for the Fred Drift.

Re FL and your requirements, Id be looking at the west coast, Boca Grande, Tampa, St Pete - there are so many properties with their own docks in those areas and plenty to rent. The Gulf will be warm, less crowds and some pretty amazing boating fun to be had.

I was lucky to have a place in Tarpon for a few years with a small boat tied up outside and it was some of the best time I’ve had on the water.

‘don’t let the gays put you off"..... I didn't say that did I so your argument is null and void? My quote of "My job, not gay" was tongue in cheek and anyone would see that. Key West is the gay capital of Florida and is a wonderful place to visit as is all the keys. Get of your moral high horse.;)

Agreed. I've seen most of FL, and all the stretch of coast W of Tampa is the one I preferred, overall.
That said, we also made a home exchange in KW for a couple of weeks, and we also enjoyed our stay there a lot.
Btw, the colonial style home was one of the nicest and cleanest we ever exchanged, and the owners were a gay couple from NYC, if that's relevant.
 
I also recommend the West Coast , we rented a waterfront villa with boat dock in Cape Coral two years ago , loads of choice but make sure you are near the ocean and not 30 mins down the canals . We hired a 26 foot bow rider with a 250 on the back and had a ball exploring the sheltered waters and visiting lots of the islands.
The yanks certainly make a water based life easy

If you are open to suggestions (and mind, I seconded Nigelpickin when he mentioned the W coast!), for an ocean front holiday in the US I would come back to southern CA rather than anywhere in FL - hands down! :encouragement:

I agree that CA has a lot to offer but a fortnight in say, Santa Barbara or Venice Beach will cost the OP many times the amount that a villa with a dock will cost on the Gulf of Mexico. No doubt that the Pacific Coast is a natural masterpiece but for boating in CA I would say that one might be better off lake side - with a day boat or pontoon boat - plenty of choice - we had a rather fantastic time on Bass Lake a few years ago.

All subjective and just my opinion of course...

Yep, similarly we rent a house with a dock on a barrier island at Placida every year. About 30 seconds to the intracoastal!

I was referring to FantyFest which is about to start in Key West. Utterly bonkers and great fun. Even more so when Halloween is in the last Sat. Yes I have done it and yes got naked with the best of them !

My point about being the worse place is that it’s just a city at the end of the keys. You think it will be paradise but it’s not. It’s nice but all the keys you drive through tend to be a lot nicer plus they (most) have real beaches.

Don’t ignore them on the drive through. A rookie mistake.

Straight, gay, trans whatever does not even come into it and I never made any suggestion it did. Never even crossed my mind. I don’t see the world like that I am afraid. I don’t single out any group or race.
