Hi Guys
been surfing the sites for another boat and have come across a florida based company who import to southampton, the prices are very attractive,£23000 for a boat you would pay £33000 here. Has anyone you know done this?? sounds almost to good to be true!!!!!

In which case , many apologies are in order !! Also welcome to the forum as a belated 'come and join us'. Given you live ther do we assume the average age has just increased....only jesting !!

P.S. brendan is right .. do the search , loads of stuff on importing. Simple synposis ' Don't do it unless you are wired up at both ends and know the regs. really well.'

Does that price include freight, import taxes, VAT, voltage change and, if necessary, CE certification. If so, and I doubt it, it might be worth looking at

I posted my experiences on this subject a couple of weeks back because I went into this in some depth.

Unless I am mistaken, the company you refer to is Global Trace Partners Inc. It is run by a chap called Mark O'Carroll

mark_ocarroll.jpg

I spoke to him on a number of occassions and on each occassion he failed to satisfy my nagging doubts over the process.

GTP do not accept any credit cards, so purchase protection is nom-existant. Instead, he insists that you send 25% by bank transfer and he will then ship the boat and you pay the balance. That doesn't sound right to me - for both parties. Firstly, how do you know he won't run off with your money?? Secondly, how does he know that you are a bone fide purchaser and that he hasn't just wasted all his exporting costs on a Walter Mitty??

Then you have VAT and import duties at 17.5% and 10% respectively. Plus any other costs. When you work it out, it doesn't work out!!

What about all those boats that feature in lovely pictures?? It doen't take a 10 year old with a digital camera any brains at all to wander along the marinas and storage bays to get some nice snaps (call me Mr. Cynical).

Lastly, why does a chap who has himself up as the CEO of this Global company answer the phone himself. Or could it be that there is only one person.

It may all be legit - but my nose is twitching!
